Nesmith, J.W. of Golden

Granted patent #169,831 for spark-arrester smokestack 9 November 1875.

Becomes General Superintendent of the DSP&P 26 July 1878 (had been Master Mechanic of the Kansas Pacific's Denver Division. Replaced by C.W. Fisher 30 January 1879.

His smokestacks were used for "several years" after his replacement [1878-1883?]

Congdon, Isaac H.

Granted patent #         for spark-arrester smokestack 14 May 1878. Was then Union Pacific Superintendent of Motive Power.

His smokestacks were widely used after 1883, during the period of UP control [1881-1893] though phased out late 1880s ...

McConnell,

"Pancake" came into vogue across entire U.P. system in the mid-to-late 1880s. Was adopted by D&LG and applied to some locos.

Lasted well into C&S period.
