100 years ago, railroad track was maintained by section crews, so called for the “sections” of track under their jurisdiction. Sections were only several miles in length as crews could not travel great distances. Small buildings were built along the track to house the section crew’s tools and equipment. Mid-Continent’s section shed was used by the Milwaukee Road in Fond du Lac, WI. Moved to the museum in 1982, it contains a collection of track tools, many photos of section crews at work, and a 3-wheel velocipede used by track inspectors.
