railroad flanger car
Milwaukee Road #X900291 in Mid-Continent’s display yard. January 16, 2018.

A flanger is used to clear snow and ice from between the rails using plows mounted under the carbody. Research on Milwaukee Road #X900291 is currently in progress. It is known the flanger was originally built as a tender for a 2-8-2 steam locomotive and later converted into a flanger by the Milwaukee Road in their shops. It was later acquired by the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad and renumbered to WSOX #8. The flanger is occasionally used by Mid-Continent Railway Museum prior to wintertime events like Santa Express if ground conditions warrant.
